from Alter’s “Author’s Note” to “The Defining Moment”, about FDR and the 100 Days: “I wrote this book to better understand a few timeless questions about the nature of crisis leadership and the meaning of the American experiment in self-government. What is government for? How can it be mobilized in an emergency to secure safety and ease suffering? Where...

Explaining can’t be done by looking at the past. The past is dead, filthy causist. If you try, the past retroactively becomes a series of events that were occurring towards a goal which, at the time, they are not.

Despite the sad flat platitude of it all, making resolutions makes sense. Appreciate people in your life, get healthy, get as many other people healthy as you can (as a side note, at least!), and act to make the world better, if nothing else by doing your jobs to the fullest: brother, teacher, lackey, leader, friend, and who-have-you….
